My brain has reached the saturation point from 36 straight hours of studying. I just want to have the Barbaras play in my room and to never get out of bed again. |

Like so many bloggers whose enthusiasm rapidly wanes, I suddenly feel revitalized and inspired to delete all my old, irrelevant entries in hopes of filling this space with something, you know, meaningful. We'll see how that works out.
First item on the agenda: Eric and I spent Friday and Saturday of last week in Memphis, bookended by ten hours of caffeine, orange slice, and various nut-fueled driving. Getting to see Ray again has definitely been an early highlight of a thus-far (outwardly) uneventful year. Unfortunately, I don't own a camera, and the money I considered spending on a disposable instead went to records/books/clothes. We explored abandoned buildings, gorged Southern-style on Moon Pies and popcorn, geeked out on records and frivolous thrift store goods and had some serious Wii competition with Rachel's posi++ new friends. Hopefully I'll write more on this trip later in the week, seriously a great (and eye-opening when compared with Austin) experience.
Earlier tonight Eric, a few other guys and I watched The King of Kong. After missing it in theaters and being beaten to the punch by other renters in both Austin and Memphis, I finally picked it up today at Vulcan. I'd heard nothing but praise for the film, but I was definitely not prepared for what I saw. The characters were incredible, more quirky and vivid than any I've seen in recent films; the story inflates an arcade-board rivalry into a sprawling humble-vs-proud, average man-vs-oppressive, corrupt video game bureaucracy struggle. Like Brazil or Kafka, but more triumphant. And with more barrels. If you've ever thrown the controller at the TV, rent this right now. If you've never had any fits of game-induced rage, rent this anyway and be inspired to let your dignity (and wireless controllers) go. |
